RUGBY IN LIMA
Your guide to the rugby scene and rugby clubs in Lima
6th Aug 2024 | 4-min read
I t might come as a surprise, but there is an established rugby scene in Lima. By that, I mean there are several men’s and women’s rugby teams in Lima with matches and tournaments organised by the Federación Peruana de Rugby.
How can I find a rugby club in Lima?
There is a Find a Club section on the Federación Peruana de Rugby site, but it doesn’t work!
However, some online digging found all the active men’s and women’s rugby clubs in Lima. Given the number of rugby clubs in Lima, you should find a club that trains near you. Training runs from January/February to November/December depending on the club, coinciding with the rugby season. (I couldn’t get confirmation from most clubs about their training, so best to check with individual clubs.)
All rugby clubs in Lima seem to have at least a Facebook page if not their own website.

Women’s rugby clubs
Most rugby clubs in Lima have both men’s and women’s teams, but here are the women's teams that have taken part in the most recent rugby tournaments in Lima. There are other women's rugby teams, but apparently playing numbers at the clubs fluctuate, so it is hard to give a definitive list of women's rugby clubs in Lima. I imagine the fluctuating numbers must explain why some clubs combine to take part in tournaments.

What competitive rugby is there in Lima?
There are 15’s, 10’s and 7’s rugby tournaments in Lima. I’m a little hazy about the exact tournament details, but I know that men play 15’s and 7’s and women play 10’s and 7’s.
The 15’s and 10’s tournaments are known as the Torneo Regional de Rugby de Lima. If you’re thinking of a tournament then, really it is more like a mini-league with games played across multiple weeks. As mentioned above, there are two divisions for men’s adult rugby in Lima: Elite and Primera.
Then, there are several men’s and women’s 7’s tournaments across the season, which are part of the Circuito Nacional de Sevens.

Where do rugby matches take place in Lima?
Rugby matches take place in the very south of the city at the Estadio de Rugby in the Complejo Deportivo de Andrés Avelino Cáceres in Villa María del Triunfo. This is the sports complex* that was built for the 2019 Pan American Games, and it will be used again during the XX Pan American Games in 2027.
The two rugby pitches are made of synthetic grass.
*This is the same sports complex where competitive hockey is played in Lima.
Who organises rugby in Lima?
