First off, by hockey, I mean field hockey. I’m from the UK, so to me, hockey is field hockey, and ice hockey is ice hockey!
There may only be one hockey pitch in the whole of Lima, but nevertheless, competitive hockey exists.Below is a list of the men’s and women’s hockey clubs in Lima. These clubs all take part in an annual tournament, which in effect is a mini-league played over several weeks.

S/120 per month (guests)
You don’t have to be a member of Lima Cricket & Football Club (the whole sports club) to play for the hockey club. You can pay separately to play hockey as a guest and attend all training sessions that month.
Reach out to the hockey club before going for your first time, as you will be able to attend for free as a guest of the club captain for your first training.
If you’re going to be in Lima for a while, you may want to consider becoming a member of Lima Cricket & Football Club since this is a sports complex with good facilities and the chance to play lots of other sports. Some of the facilities in this club include an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, paddleball courts, and a gym. Hockey training is then only an additional S/80 a month for club members.

Nearly all of these hockey clubs were originally Lima school alumni clubs, hence the names and training locations, but all these clubs are in fact open to everyone.
Training takes place at the given locations of the clubs. However, clubs will also train at the Estadio de Hockey in Villa María once the annual tournament starts …
What is the annual hockey tournament in Peru?
Each year, the Federación Deportiva Peruana de Hockey (Hockey Perú) organises a men’s (varones) and women’s (damas) tournament over a three-month period starting in early April.
In the 2024 tournament, each club will play each other three times in a league format. Matches take place on Sundays, and there will be four matches every Sunday (two men’s and two women’s). This is known as the apertura. Expect early starts, as the first scheduled match starts at 8:30am!
The top two teams at the end of the four rounds will face off in the final, or clausura, to be crowned winners. The bottom two teams play each other for third/fourth place.
All games take place at the Estadio de Hockey.
Unless you've played at a high level or your club/university has a water-based pitch, you may not have played on such a quality pitch and in such an arena. I’ve only ever played on one water-based pitch in the UK, but with none of the backdrop that the Estadio de Hockey provides.
Another unique feature for your average local hockey player will be the electronic scoreboard … and video umpires! Yes, all hockey games are played in accordance with a professional game, so there are referrals and video umpires.
Where is the Estadio de Hockey located in Lima?
The Estadio de Hockey is in the Complejo Deportivo Andrés Avelino Cáceres in Villa María del Triunfo*. This was the sports complex built for the 2019 Pan American Games, and it will be used again during the XX Pan American Games in 2027.
This complex is on the city edges, about 6 miles (10 km) east (as the condor flies) from Barranco. It’s about 25 minutes (with good traffic) in a car from Barranco, but your club will likely carpool to get you to the stadium for training and matches.
As for public transport, the main road (about 1 mile/1.6 km away) will connect you with buses to other parts of the city, like Miraflores. You will also find Estación San Juan on the metro line here.
*This is the same sports complex where competitive rugby is played in Lima.
Are there any other hockey tournaments in Lima?
Lima hockey clubs also take part in an indoor hockey tournament in July and August.
Hockey Perú
All competitive hockey in Peru is organised by Hockey Perú.
The federation’s website is not so up-to-date, but it gives you a decent introduction to hockey here, and it’s how I learnt that adult hockey existed in Lima.
The federation’s social media accounts, on the other hand, are active, and you can follow the hockey tournaments there.
